Background of the Study
Music and dance have emerged as significant cultural expressions that extend beyond artistic performance to serve as vital therapeutic interventions in communities (Adebayo, 2023). In Ijebu North, these indigenous art forms are increasingly recognized for their capacity to alleviate stress, enhance mental well‐being, and foster community solidarity (Ogunleye, 2024). Traditional rhythms, melodies, and dance movements are woven into daily social practices, offering non‐pharmacological methods for emotional release and healing (Adeyemi, 2023). Recent studies indicate that culturally grounded therapeutic practices can bridge the gap between conventional healthcare and community-based interventions (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, local initiatives integrating music and dance have shown promising outcomes in reducing anxiety and depression while also preserving cultural heritage (Okafor, 2024). This background discussion underscores the historical evolution of these art forms as tools of therapy, their socio-cultural importance, and the emerging evidence of their effectiveness. As mental health challenges escalate, exploring the role of such culturally embedded practices becomes crucial for developing sustainable community health models (Afolabi, 2023; Babatunde, 2025). The study, therefore, seeks to critically appraise these modalities to inform future therapeutic strategies within the local context.
Statement of the Problem
Despite anecdotal evidence supporting music and dance as effective therapeutic tools, empirical research in Ijebu North remains limited (Olatunji, 2023). The absence of structured evaluations creates a knowledge gap regarding how these interventions mitigate mental health challenges and promote social cohesion (Akinola, 2024). Additionally, inconsistencies in program implementation and limited resources hinder the establishment of best practices (Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to address these issues by systematically assessing the efficacy of cultural therapies, thereby informing policy development and optimizing community-based mental health programs.
